
FALSE PELVIS
- The false pelvis, also called the greater or major pelvis.
- The greater pelvis is the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle and in front of the pelvic brim.
- It is the bony area between the iliac crests and is superior to the pelvic inlet.
- It is bounded on either side by the ilium
- t is generally considered part of the abdominal cavity
- Also referred as ABDOMINOPELVIC CAVITY
- It has little obstetric relevance
BONY BOUNDARIES
- Anteriorly; abdominal wall
- Laterally; Ala of ilium
- Posteriorly; L5 and S1 vertebrae
- Front; incomplete, wide interval between anterior borders of ilia
- Base; sacrum
ORGANS IN FALSE PELVIS
It supports;
- Intestines (loops of ileum and sigmoid colon)
NERVES The femoral nerve from L2-L4 is in the greater pelvis
TRUE PELVIS
- The true pelvis, also called the lesser or minor pelvis.
- The lesser pelvis is the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle
- It lies between the pelvic inlet and the pelvic outlet.
- The true pelvis area makes up the pelvic cavity.
- This cavity is a short, curved channel, deeper on its posterior than on its anterior.
BONY BOUNDARIES
- Front and below; pubic symphysis and superior rami of pubis
- Above and behind; sacrum and coccyx
- Laterally; superior ramus of ischium and part of ilium below arcuate line
- Roof; pelvic brim
- Anterior; pubic symphysis
- Floor; pelvic floor
ORGANS IN TRUE PELVIS
It contains
- Rectum
- Bladder
- Pelvic colon
In females
- Reproductive organs; uterus & vagina
NERVES The pelvic splanchnic nerves arising at S2–S4 are in the lesser pelvis.
